Other Writers of Speculative Fiction: David B. Coe: This guy's really disgusting. Not only is he a new writer, but the first time out of the box, he sells a three book trilogy in hard cover. And he writes well, on top of it. Disgusting, I tell you. It's a damned good thing I like the man, or I'd be really ticked at him. Seriously, go check out David's stuff. It's well worth it. Joe Haldeman: one of our favorite writers, and -- with Gay -- two people we'd love to see more often than we do. Tanya Huff: I don't know that anyone writes dialogue better than Tanya. She has a wonderful touch with characters, and you'll love her books. I know it. By the way, the link is to her livejournal page. Geoffrey Landis: an excellent, award-winning writer, and an interesting fellow panelist Holly Lisle: Holly's a wonderfully deft writer, and her site has a wealth of great information for new writers George RR Martin: When you talk about the current Big Writers in the genre, George's name will come up. And for good reason. Maureen McHugh: There are very, very few people who write this well. If you've not read any of Maureen's work, do yourself a favor and pick up one of her books. Fiona Patton: If you love rich, thick high fantasy, Fiona's work is for you. Her landscapes are lovingly detailed. The linked site is a tribute site, as Fiona also doesn't run her own at the moment. John Scalzi: Not someone I know personally (yet, anyway), but he’s an interesting writer and an even more interesting blogger, and a definite force as far as web presence! Lisa Silverthorne: Lisa has published some evocative and charming stories, and has a magical, deft touch with words. Look her up!
Assorted Other Exits: Bruce Schneier is one of the most interesting and intelligent people I know, and he's become one of the gurus of cryptography. His company is Counterpane, and well worth investigating if you're interested in issues of security. Want to know more about the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, the organization for professional writers of the genre? The site looks like it was built in 1990, but has a plethora of good information for those interested in writing sf and fantasy. If you're interested in the craft of writing science fiction and fantasy, check out the THE BULLETIN, SFWA's official magazine. Several of the articles are online, and you can subscribe from this page, if you're so inclined. And while we're talking science fiction and fantasy.... You ought to check our host site, which has lots of interesting material: SFF-NET For fans of the WILD CARDS series, you really should check out WILD CARDS ONLINE -- a terrific resource for fans of the series. Or, if you’d like to talk WILD CARDS, then go to the Captain Comics bulletin board, which has a strong WILD CARDS topic. You may also want to take a look at the CFG (Cincinnati Fantasy Group) -- the local fan group, which puts on Midwestcon and Octocon. Aikido is an interesting martial art, entirely defensive in nature and almost dance-like in appearance, but with the ability to be extremely powerful at the same time. Aikido of Cincinnati is one of the largest dojos in the Midwest, and is unusual also in that it is both non-profit and board-run. AoC has over twenty black belts among its membership (very unusual), and is headed by Charlie McGinnis, Rokudan (6th dan) and Shidoin. Interestingly enough, there are several sf and fantasy writers who are also aikidoists. If you're interested in aikido, this is a great place to check it out! For anyone interested in learning more about aikido, here's another site: Aikido Centers of New Jersey. Greg O'Connor is the sensei there, and in addition to being one of my favorite teachers, he's also a terrific person (even if he did steal Mary Kay away from us!). Greg's put together a great website, with links to many other aiki sites as well as a dojo locator. Check it out! |
